The economic crisis in Lebanon, compounded by the destruction of the Beirut Port and the COVID-19 pandemic, has severely impacted the health sector, particularly the pharmaceutical and medical supply industry. This has underscored the need for Lebanon to establish a stable and secure source of prescription drug production. The study presents two potential solutions: (1) revising the subsidy system to support local pharmaceutical production, and (2) advocating for the prescription and use of generic drugs. Investing in local drug production can foster trust in the quality of domestically produced medicines. This can be supplemented by promoting the use of generic drugs, once a robust system for local drug production is in place. The study emphasizes the importance of both immediate measures to address the current crisis and long-term strategies to ensure sustainable pharmaceutical supply.
